The semicolon is indeed a tricky form of punctuation. I generally try to avoid using it in my writing, because there is so much "grey area" around when and how to use it. I stick to using periods. They serve essentially the same purpose as semicolons (along with a few additional ones) without all of the confusion. The sites you included are pretty good, but if you are really interested in getting a feel for the semicolon, I suggest the following site:

Kelli included this link in her semicolon blog, and I loved it. The author is very funny and very informative. Hope it helps.
Not sure if the link in the above comment will work, but you can find the same link on Kelli's blog (http://kellibsblog.blogspot.com/). I highly recommend it, either way!
